Helen’s Home Cooking

I am going to be printing a weekly recipe starting over the next couple of weeks on the 15th of February giving you hopefully enough time to purchase the needed stock purchases. Fresh ingredients that shall be needed will be supplied at the end of each recipe for the following week making Wednesdays your cooking with The Orkney News night.

The idea is to focus on recipes that are quick, easy and more importantly very affordable.

I realise that time constraints and finances are a big put off to making a meal from scratch against pre-made foods that only need thrown in the oven, and I am hopefully going to show an alternative way to eat reasonably healthily and how to get more for your money.

The week after each recipe we at The Orkney News would love for you to make and share a photo of your finished meal which we shall post on our gallery wall.

To get started here are a list of the store cupboard must haves.

  • Black Pepper

  • Garlic granules
  • Mixed herbs
  • Dried Thyme
  • Dried Rosemary
  • Chicken/Vegetable stock cubes
  • Chili flakes
  • Tomato pureé
  • Tinned Tomatoes
  • Cornflour
  • Bread Flour

  • Easy cook Yeast

As stated, each week I shall tell you the following weeks recipe allowing enough time to buy the required main ingredient pasta, rice, potatoes etc along with any fresh produce, meat and vegetables that shall be required.
