Anchors (Far) Aweigh

To celebrate 20 Years since the inception of the cancer charity Friends of Anchor the Dream Big Campaign has been launched.  This is its biggest fundraising appeal yet. The Friends of Anchor are  pledging £1m towards the University of Aberdeen’s  £4.5m project to attract and recruit a world-class oncology research team to the North-east of Scotland.

As part of this 20for20 event 20 decorated anchors have been designed and placed across the North East of Scotland. And we have one here in Orkney.

Unfortunately Orkney Islands Council has erected it out on the Foreland Road in Kirkwall and for people unacquainted with this part of the town it is opposite the construction site of the new hospital. The council have said that this is a temporary location.  The anchor was transported from Hatston and installed by  Andrew Sinclair Limited.

It is a great shame that it has been placed so out of the way as I am sure our many visitors to the islands would have enjoyed seeing it (as would the rest of us). They may also have become interested in what it represented and perhaps have donated to this well deserving charity.

Orkney’s anchor was designed by artist Katie Guthrie, who wanted to do what she could do to support patients cared for by the ANCHOR Unit. Katie’s aim was to create a piece of work that would inspire and uplift.

The 20for20 campaign runs from July – October with the Anchors being auctioned off in November with the funds going to the charity.
