Kirkwall Flower Arrangement Club have excelled themselves yet again with their annual flower festival in St Magnus Cathedral. This year it is part of the Magnus 900 celebrations.
The exhibition runs from Wednesday 16th August to Sunday 20th August 10am to 5pm. The flower displays represent an interpretation of the life and death of St Magnus.
Born c1080 into Norwegian aristocracy Magnus was the joint ruler of the Earldom of Orkney with his cousin Haakon. He was executed by the order of Haakon and buried in Egilsay where he fell. Later the bones were transferred to Birsay and finally to the Cathedral constructed in his honour.
The bones of St Magnus are interred in one of the pillars in the Cathedral. You can read an excellent account of the story of Magnus the Martyr here.
