Make a HOO Coming to Orkney

‘Make A HOO’  By Sita Pieraccini  In association with FeralMake A HOO

Acclaimed physical theatre maker, Sita Pieraccini, combines compelling physicality, shadow play and kaleidoscopic visuals in her latest piece ‘Make A HOO’ which tours Scotland this Autumn.

The shimmering heat of tropical hills and purring of the Sri Lankan plains set the scene for a young woman’s journey as she strives to reconnect with her identity and the world in which she lives. Caught in an elaborate game of call and response with a shape-shifting being which only comes to life at night, she takes audiences on a journey between dream and wakefulness as she seeks harmony.

Saturated with the lure of adventure and risk, this solo performance draws on the relationship between song and labour, routine and recounting, and of trying to find your echo in a world of repetition. Coloured by live vocal imitations and raw field recordings, Make A HOO takes the form of modern folklore with a symphonic twist.

Sita’s choreography is scored by a multi-textured soundscape composed in collaboration with musician David Pollock and incorporates field recordings of the rural and urban Sri Lankan environments by sound artist Mark Vernon. Live vocals and sounds from contact mics are manipulated during the performance to recreate the mechanical whirrs, clicks and rattles of the tea plantation, traffic noise and hooting tuk tuks.

Make a HOO invites the audience on a whistle stop tour of the customs, mythology, sights and sounds of Sri Lanka from the bustle of down town Columbo to the mysticism of the Horton plains.  Inspired by an artist residency in Sri Lanka and featuring elements of local folk songs, Make A HOO combines vivid sonic environments and dynamic physicality to weave together the story of a day and a night in the life of this young woman.

Make A HOO is touring Oct and Nov 2017 to Platform (Glasgow – Part of Eastern Promise Festival), Assembly Roxy (Glasgow), Harbour Arts Centre (Irvine), Fife College (Kirkcaldy), Lyth Arts Centre (Wick), Orkney Theatre (Kirkwall), Gable End Theatre (Hoy) and Macphail Centre (Ullapool).
