“Rolling in Profits” RBS Continues to Close local Branches

unite the unionUnite the union has called for an investigation into the continued closure by the Royal Bank of Scotland of many of its branches when it has just announced profit of £792m for the first three months of 2018.

Mary Alexander, Deputy Scottish Secretary of Unite said:

“Here we have it in the black and white on the RBS balance sheet – RBS is rolling in profits. Surely now its time for the bank to call a moratorium on the axe hanging over 62 branches in Scotland. After all this is now a totally different situation profit-wise to when the plans were made to close one in three branches”

At the Scottish Affairs Select Committee hearing in Westminster in January RBS directors told MPs that it would save £9.5m a year after closing the 62 branches.

Mary Alexander continued:

“RBS now has the chance to prove what its telling people that it is the Royal Bank FOR Scotland. What is the point of closing 62 branches to save next to nothing in the grand scheme of things against profits of three quarters of a billion pounds in three months. Time to call a halt to the closures to save the communities which stand now to face an economic whirlwind”

  1. Way back, some years ago, when the RBS was first in trouble, there was something I didn’t understand.
The bank was in trouble, big trouble, yet, everywhere I went, they had paid for huge adverts, and they were sponsoring football teams etc. The bank limped along, from one crisis to the next, still paying for huge adverts and sponsoring things, while closing branches. All shored up by public money. I still don’t understand this.
Though, If I did understand that way of dealing with finance, I suppose I’d be a ….banker. No thanks.
If I ran our domestic finances in the same way ,we’d be in the gutter.
To quote Mr Micawber: “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen [pounds] nineteen [shillings] and six [pence], result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.”
