A Bojagi for Betty: Northlight Gallery

Northlight May 25thThe next exhibition at the busy Northlight Gallery in Stromness is ‘A Bojagi for Betty’ . A site specific installation dedicated to Betty Corrigal, which honours strong mothers everywhere.

On the centenary of her father’s birth, artist Barbara Rowell returns to contemplate life in Stromness around the time of his birth and early life.

Rowell’s research will be developed during her residency at Northlight Gallery, through the reconstruction of textile fragments which have been reworked with natural dye processes in indigo, madder and cochineal, with markings inspired by Rowell’s ongoing interest in passage grave art and grooved ware pottery.

The exhibition opens on Monday 21st of May – Tuesday 29th May. Times: 1 – 5pm, except for Wednesday closing.

There will also be an  opportunity to meet the artist, Barbara Rowell, on Friday 25th May from 5-7pm.

(A Bojagi is a Korean wrapping cloth, made from scraps of recycled fabrics, triple stitched ‘kekki’ seams and protective embroidery symbols are often added)
