Poetry Corner: Anniversary Twenty-Five

By Richard Wallace

The candles on your birthday cake

are more than when you came.

To me, it seems like yesterday,

there’s no need to explain

that the lines that touch

the face I love

now make a picture frame.

You’re more lovely now

than roses in the rain.

*****

Your eyes

are so much softer now

but the sparkle still remains.

The smile that brightens every day

is the smile that stays the same.

More precious than a ring of gold

is the silver in your hair;

more lovely now

than roses in the rain.

*****

Your laughter always has its way

and your heart is still your own.

The kindness of your manner

makes a stranger feel at home.

The passion of the love

we knew

may never come again

but you’re more lovely now

than roses in the rain.

*****

And a lot of years of spending time together,

in all those years you see a lot of weather.

A lot of years of doing something right.

We save the special moments, like tonight.

And there has always been more hope that fear.

It’s a pleasure to consider all those years.

*****

Yes it is,

*****

It’s a pleasure to consider all those years.

*****

Happy Anniversary.

rose in the rain

  1. I wrote this well over twenty-five years ago for friends who were having their twenty-fifth. |It can also be strummed out on a guitar. It is out there for anybody who can make use of it and thank you, Richard
