The House Sparrow is Scotland’s Number 1 Garden Bird

472,758 people took part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch this year. This was the 40th one and is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. The survey was held over the weekend of 26th – 28th of January and also included a survey of other wildlife to be found in our gardens.

The results for Scotland’s Top Ten Garden Birds are:

1. House sparrow
2. Starling
3. Chaffinch
4. Blue Tit
5. Blackbird
6. Wood pigeon
7. Goldfinch
8. Great Tit
9. Robin
10. Coal Tit

Across the UK garden birds which are in decline are starlings and the song thrush, a 77% decline since 1979. Despite being at number one spot, house sparrows have also declined over the years, by 56%.

Some garden birds have increased in numbers: coal tits and goldfinches.
