First View of Andromeda Galaxy Through a Telescope: #OnThisDay

“like a candle seen at night through a horn”

On 15th of December 1612 German Astronomer Simon Marius ( Simon Mayr)is  the first person  to observe  the Andromeda galaxy through a telescope.

He was born in Gunzenhausen, near Nuremberg, in 1573.

The Andromeda Galaxy had been known by Persian astronomers for centuries.

Marius also named the four largest moons of Jupiter: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
