The project won highly commended in the ‘new life for old buildings’ category.

Architect Leslie Burgher said:

“I am delighted that the project and David and Judith’s vision for it have received this recognition from the profession across the Highlands and Islands.”

The project was part-funded under the Kirkwall Townscape Heritage Initiative which was supported by Orkney Islands Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Environment Scotland.

Councillor Graham Sinclair said:

“Congratulations to everyone involved in the restoration of the Storehouse for winning the design award this week.

“The Storehouse was part of a £3.5 million major restoration project that ended in 2019 that was set to put some lift into some old buildings within Kirkwall.

“The aim of the project was to help restore buildings within the centre of Kirkwall, making it a more attractive place and to create more jobs.”
