An additional positive covid case has been recorded in Orkney bringing the cumulative total to 61.
Whilst Orkney has the lowest numbers recorded so far for Covid in Scotland it is a worrying and steady trend upwards in numbers.
The numbers for Scotland, 28th of January 2021, are as follows:
- 1,201 new cases of COVID-19 reported
- 25,955 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results – 5.6% of these were positive
- 82 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive
- 142 people are in intensive care with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 1,983 people are in hospital with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 462,092 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 6,596 have received their second dose (as at 8:30am on Wednesday 27 January)
The UK now has one of the highest numbers of deaths recorded due to Covid in the world at well over 100,000.
In Scotland in the week ending 24 January, 448 deaths were registered where COVID-19 was on the death certificate.
- 5,970 people have died who have tested positive as at 28 January
- 7,902 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate up to 24 January
- 38% of COVID-19 registered deaths related to deaths in care homes, 56% were in hospitals and 6% were at home or non-institutional settings (as at 24 January)
95% of adult care home residents have now had their first dose of the Covid vaccine in Scotland which will offer them some protection from this dreadful virus.
World wide over 2million people have lost their lives to the virus. That is why distribution of the vaccine has to be worldwide or all countries will be susceptible to more variants of the virus as it adapts to survive the changing situation.

The R number, rate of infection, in Scotland has now fallen below 1 thanks to the amazing efforts of citizens to observe restrictions.
