Another 2 positive Covid cases in Orkney have been recorded. This is an extremely worrying upward trend in Orkney.
Travel in and out of Scotland is illegal unless for essential purposes. And the same applies to travel to mainland Scotland (which is under a level 4 lockdown) from Orkney. The virus arrives with people. The only way to limit the spread is for only those who have to travel for essential purposes to do so.
The stats for Scotland published on 12th of February 2021 are as follows:
- 830 new cases of COVID-19 reported
- 19,184 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results – 5.2% of these were positive
- 67 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive
- 115 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 1,472 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 1,113,625 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 13,566 have received their second dose
On Monday, 15th February, Quarantine hotels will be used in Scotland for those arriving on international flights.
But again for mainland Scotland, the advice is to stay at home

- wear a face covering
- avoid crowded places
- clean hands and surfaces regularly
- stay 2m away from other people
- self-isolate and book a test if you have COVID-19 symptoms (new continuous cough, fever or loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste)
- download the Protect Scotland contact tracing app

With all these travel-related cases recently plus so-called close contacts… the question remains how anybody – presumedly having travelled for essential reasons – is able to pass it on to other people in times when we should not have close contacts at all (unless care bubbles).
Wouldn’t it simply be common sense to adhere to a self-imposed 10 day isolation period from family members and anybody else when returning from an essential journey?
For the ones who haven’t noticed: The Scottish case fatality rate has been creeping up (and continues to do so) which is easily calculated by using the data the government provides daily. New variants spread more easily, by the looks of it aerosol plays now a bigger role than previously… and how quick things get out of control can be seen when looking at the Western Isles figures. They did well for a long time… until the guard was lowered… is this not enough of a warning?
In my personal opinion, ‘travel’ includes inter-island trips and I cannot see any justification for travel from the Outer Isles to Kirkwall only to go to the supermarkets when there are well-stocked island shops who supply everything we need.
Other stuff can be sent out, I have not come across any shop in Kirkwall who didn’t. In fact, one phone call, order and pay over phone and 1 or 2 days later the needed items are with you.
This is much safer for everyone: the staff in the shops, the hauliers who bring supplies across to the isles (because they do not have to share spaces on the boats with other passengers) and the consumer who can stay safely at home.
Well, S Davidson, you’ve said just about what I was thinking. Why are people still ‘island hopping’, unless absolutely necessary?

Purely selfishly – I’m thinking, what a time to have to go indoors among people, after months of being at home or outdoors. The Balfour tomorrow for my Covid jab.
To be absolutely honest, I just want to stay at home and not go anywhere indoors where there are people, as I have done for months.
But – I also know that I really should get my jab, as that is one way to get rid of this pernicious little bug.
I will go, but I am not happy about it.
