Poetry Corner: Bed in Summer

By Bernie Bell

It’s not only children who resent having to go to bed by day!

Because I’m a knackered person I need to go to bed early – for a grown-up – usually about half past 9.

After snoozing on the sofa last night, I headed off at 10 – having first remembered this poem, and taken this picture …..

Before long everyone in the Northern Isles will be going to bed by day – what a lovely light we get though, to see us on our way to the land of dreaming………..

Bed in Summer

In winter I get up at night

    And dress by yellow candle-light.

In summer, quite the other way,

I have to go to bed by day.

*****

I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree,

Or hear the grown-up people’s feet

Still going past me in the street.

*****

And does it not seem hard to you,

When all the sky is clear and blue,

And I should like so much to play,

To have to go to bed by day?

    • Well, Cath, it’s glorious today – it’s been glorious all week.
I’m down to one layer of clothing!
      Can’t beat it.
