The cumulative total of Covid cases in Orkney has now reached 478 as 55 new positive test results were recorded in the Health Board area.
The stats for Scotland published on 28th of October 2021 are as follows:
- 2,153 new cases of COVID-19 reported*
- 37,368 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results*
- 6.3% of these were positive*
- 20 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive
- 58 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 932 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 4,312,204 people have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination and 3,900,427 have received their second dose
*The backlog of NHS Scotland Pillar 1 lab test results that we were unable to report yesterday due to an issue affecting data flow on evening of 26 October 2021, are included in today’s newly reported figures
To keep yourself and others safe please:
- get the vaccine when you are offered it
- wear a face covering where required
- wash your hands regularly, and cover your nose and mouth if coughing or sneezing
- self isolate and take a PCR test if you have symptoms
- take regular tests if you don’t have symptoms to reduce the risk of spreading the virus
- meet outside if you can, and open windows when indoors
- keep your distance from people not in your group
- work from home, or do a mixture of home and office working if possible
- use the apps: COVID status (vaccine passport), Protect Scotland and Check-in Scotland

55 new cases in a day is a deeply concerning number. We have seemingly lost control of the virus.
I do hope these have been well tracked and traced. I noticed on my one recent visit to a local hostelry that names and phone numbers are no longer collected. This severely hampers track and tracing. I hope NHS Orkney are able to disclose the general nature of this huge record outbreak within the next few days so we can take individual precautions. I am 76 and still await my appointment for the booster, which will soon be a month later than advised.
I went to a local cafe that no longer takes contact numbers – I won’t be back. And I had supported that place since it opened. These are simple preventative measures that take no effort to continue with. I have also been very impressed with our veterinary services who have been diligent in their methods for keeping everyone safe whilst still providing a high quality of service (Fiona G)
I believe the individual precautions we have to take are neither limited in space nor time, meaning that it does not matter in which Orkney area or in which settings these infections occurred. Community transmission is already high and it was only due to the extraordinarily low test numbers in Orkney (compared to other health boards) that the detection rate was and is low. Also, NHS Orkney still uses outdated symptoms for advice, hence many may not even come forward for tests. Given that so many individuals and businesses do not continue with NPIs (as you have outlined) and that quite a lot of community events take place in autumn where people sit in crowded (ventilated???) community halls shoulder by shoulder… the best individual precaution is probably to suspect that the virus is everywhere and just stick to the familiar rules: proper masks, physical distancing etc.

So, what do we do? I will continue to stay home, Mike will only go among people when he has to, and then wearing a mask and being sure to sanitize his hands and keep his distance.
But …that’s us. What about everyone else? It’s about all of us, and all of us surviving and not becoming ill.
This number should be on a huge sign in the middle of Kirkwall.
Are people aware of how the numbers are increasing? If so, why are they gathering together in pubs, clubs, restaurants, going on holiday, etc. etc.?
Beats me. It is up to them – but, ultimately, what each of us does in relation to this virus affects all of us.

I have seen many places were people gathering and started to see youths without masks. That was just a few days ago and was suffering anxiety attacks even being in the same building. Given we had places closed down now becouse of Covid you think these shops would be harsher on those not wearing masks. They should now because I’m not going into a shop now for weeks if I see people without masks.

What happened to tackling the greatest threat to mankind in recent times, the covid pandemic.
Delegates from right across the world together with thousands of demonstrators will be descending on Glasgow next week and mixing with the local population.
When you consider the sacrifices and disruption we have endured over the past 18 months, this conference should be virtual rather than in person.
The fact that photo opportunities and virtue signaling trumps public health speaks volumes. The next result will be a display of rampant hypocrisy all round.
Hello Lachlan, I agree with your comments. I work in Glasgow, since the first lockdown I have worked from the office due to the nature of my work. Its a commmon theme – save the planet by flying thousands of people from around the world into one city and Covid about and they aren’t hosting this online? There is no great enthusiasm for this beyond the media and the politicians (and punters renting their houses out in the West end for 500 quid a night of course). Luckily I have no underlying medical problems. I feel sorry for those that do, they include my own relatives, and are stuck indoors, especially older folk.
That said businesses in Glasgow city centre have been decimated by Covid and lockdowns and the fall out has barely begun. Its a bad situation all round and it is a very easy thing indeed to be cynical about this event. There are other issues surrounding this event that may become apparent as time goes on. I am not holding my breath on our traditional media though.
