The cumulative total of Covid cases in Orkney is now at 541 as 8 new positive tests were recorded in the Health Board area.
Over the last 7 days there have been 106 new cases in Orkney.
From 22nd to 28th of October the positive cases recorded in Orkney were as follows:
- West Mainland: 14
- Stromness, Sandwick, Stenness: 23
- East Mainland: 16
- North Isles, Linked South Isles, Hoy, Flotta, Graemsay: 18
88.8% of those aged 16 years and over have been fully vaccinated in Orkney.
The stats for Scotland published on 31st October 2021 are as follows:
- 2,513 new cases of COVID-19 reported*
- 27,809 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results*
- 9.6% of these were positive*
- 0 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive (noting that Register Offices are now generally closed at weekends)
- 64 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 910 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
- 4,317,601 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,907,056 have received their second dose
*The backlog of results being processed at the Glasgow Lighthouse laboratory, which impacted on newly reported cases and tests over the last couple of days, has now been cleared.
Please remember to:
- get the vaccine when you are offered it
- wear a face covering where required
- wash your hands regularly, and cover your nose and mouth if coughing or sneezing
- self isolate and take a PCR test if you have symptoms
- take regular tests if you don’t have symptoms to reduce the risk of spreading the virus
- meet outside if you can, and open windows when indoors
- keep your distance from people not in your group
- work from home, or do a mixture of home and office working if possible
- use the apps: COVID status (vaccine passport), Protect Scotland and Check-in Scotlan

Orkney now has almost topped the Scottish county table for cases per 100k over 7 days.
Only Clackmannanshire has pipped us.
For most of the pandemic and until a month ago we were bottom of the table and feeling safe.
You are not safe now – unless of course you think this virus is like the flu – which many idiots do.
You should know what to do by now.
It is unlikely that this outbreak is over. 55 tests detected 8 infections… it would appear that the weekend opening of the test center did not really change the number of tests. Also there have been some community events last weekend… without distancing, without masks… and it is likely that many who have in the meantime tested positive, were in attendance of these events (at the time not knowing of their own infection). The case numbers therefore will quite likely go up over the next days.
All this does not come unexpected and the question is: Why did indoor community events go ahead at all?
Why not being creative and offer a mix of virtual events and outdoor meetings?
This virus has shown us over and over again over the course of almost two years that as soon as people become too adventurous, it will rear its ugly head again. It seems the virus is better able to adapt its ‘behaviour’ for its own advantage than humans.
Only a combination of restraint, masks, distancing, hygiene plus vaccination will get us out of the pandemic.
It’s just possible there may be an increase in positive tests reported in Glasgow in the aftermath of Cop26, but I suppose its worth it if it stops the earth from being burned to a crisp!.
“Why did indoor community events go ahead at all?”
Indeed – and when they are happening, why are people daft enough to go to them?
If people need to/have to attend an indoor gathering of some kind – if everyone took a flow test before going, and only attended if clear, that would help to some extent. But – selfishness rears its ugly head again – “I WANT to go to that event – I WILL go to that event. If I take a test, I might not be able to go.”
So, they dodge the issue.
