#Covid Deaths Down, Excess Deaths Continue – Weekly Update

Published by National Records of Scotland, 25th May 2023, the number of deaths continues to show an excess over the 5 year average. Deaths involving Covid continue to decrease.

Key Stats for the month of April 2023

  • There were 5,135 deaths in April 2023. The number of deaths was 9% higher than the April five-year average.
  • Taking into account  the size and age structure of the population, the rate of mortality was 1,123 per 100,000 population. This was 3% higher than the average rate for April.
  • The leading cause of death was ischaemic heart disease, which accounted for 11% of all deaths in April.

Deaths in Scotland for the week ending 15th May 2023

Deaths involving Covid in detail.

Age 15 – 44 : 1 death, male

Age 45 – 64, 1 death male

Age 65 – 74: 3 deaths, 2 female, 1 male

Age 75 – 84: 9 deaths, 1 female, 8 male

Age 85+ : 11 deaths, 5 female, 6 male

There were 25 deaths involving Covid, Covid was the underlying cause in 13 of them. All the deaths took place in Hospital.

There were 1,227 deaths due to all causes in the week ending 15th May 2023. This was an excess of 134 deaths taken over a 5 year average. Excess deaths occurred in Cancer +30; Circulatory +61; Respiratory +11 and Other causes +43.
