The provisional total number of deaths registered in Scotland in week 32 of 2023 (7th August to 13th August was 1,117 (75 or 7% above the 5-year average).
COVID
There were 17 deaths mentioning COVID-19 on the death certificate. Covid was the underlying cause in 10 of them
Those figures in More detail:
- Age 45 – 64: 5 deaths, 2 female, 3 male
- Age 65 – 74: 4 deaths, 1 female, 3 male
- Age 75 – 84: 1 death, 1 female, 0 male
- Age 85+ : 7 deaths 4 female, 3 male
Two of the deaths were in Care Homes, 1 at Home/Non-Institutional Setting and 14 in Hospital.
The monitoring of Scotland’s waste water for Covid-19 ribonucleic acid (RNA) shows that Covid is very much still present in our communities and is increasing. The figures below are for the area served by the Kirkwall waste water service.
COVID-19 & Respiratory Surveillance in Scotland, so little testing is being done now that these figures must be viewed with that in mind.
It shows a rise of patients admitted to Hospital with Covid from 139 (week ending 6th August) to 183 (week ending 13th August)
The Number of inpatients with COVID-19 in hospital has also increased from 166 (week ending 6th August) to 219 (week ending 13th August)
EXCESS DEATHS
There were 1,117 deaths due to all causes. An excess of 75 deaths taken over a 5 year average. Excess deaths were recorded in: Cancer +25; Alzheimer’s/Dementia: +7; Circulatory: +18; Respiratory +16; Other Causes +16.
