On 31st March 1889 the construction of the Eiffel Tower was completed.
Designed as part of the 1889 Exposition Universelle, the Eiffel tower was the result of a competition launched in 1886. It was a celebration to mark 100 years since the French Revolution. The tower was finished in record time of 2 years, 2 months and 5 days. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower.
