Pre-history In The Stromness Museum

By Bernie Bell

Not quite as far back in time as Geology and Palaeontology, but also upstairs – a cabinet in a quiet corner holds some very  interesting objects…

I’ll quote from the labels

“Pottery urn containing human bone from a mound at Upper Lyking, Sandwick.  It was opened in the presence of office bearers of the Orkney Natural History Society in 1838.”

“Stone ring from a grave in Stenness.”

“Polished bone pin with human head.  Period unknown, Bay of Skaill, Sandwick.”

In a cabinet by the front door of the Museum…’Buddo’ – plus assorted bits & pieces from Skara Brae

I wonder was the pin with a human head carved on it, also from Skara Brae?
