Piglet Racing in Deerness

By Mike Robertson

You’ve heard of racing horses and dogs but piglets?  On Saturday the Deerness Hall held a race night and that‘s exactly what we did.  In the best of all possible tastes, of course.

If you haven’t been to one of these, you should give it a try if you get the chance.  You get a slightly humorous description of the competitors and a short film of the race.   You place bets, the hall takes a cut, and the rest is divided amongst the winners.  As you might expect the only guaranteed winner is the hall but that’s OK.  It’s a fun way to support the Community Association and all the work it does.

It’s quite surprising how worked up people get.  It gets quite rowdy.

So, about the piglets:  These had knitted jockeys strapped on their backs as they joyously launched themselves round an indoor track made of pallets.  They even had jumps which they leapt over with glee (or in some cases just blundered through) while the punters cheered them on enthusiastically.

All credit to Andrew for organising the event while Beki and Linda kept us lubricated from the bar.

Perhaps not the most erudite way to spend an evening but a lot of fun leaving us looking forward to the next one.
