On Friday Kirkwall Council of Churches (KCC) played to a packed house with a new nativity play based on the music of Les Misérables, raising over £800 for the Orkney foodbank.
Following the overwhelming success of their previous production, “Mamma Mia, the Nativity,” the KCC has once again captivated audiences with their latest theatrical offering, “Les Mis, the Nativity.”
The evening started with the Salvation Army brass band playing a few festive tunes and then accompanying us in carol singing led by Rev Brenda Dowie.
The performance, held at the East Kirk, drew a large crowd, filling the venue to capacity. The show featured a talented cast, including Kirsti Jones as Mary, Iain Campbell as Joseph and John Butterfield as a convincingly tipsy innkeeper.
The minimalist stage design, combined with effective use of projected imagery, created a striking visual experience. The music, adapted from the beloved musical “Les Misérables,” provided a powerful backdrop to the nativity story.
The production was made possible by the technical expertise of Peter Fey and Mark. The script, written by a friend of Rev Susan Kirkbride while serving in Afghanistan, added a unique and poignant touch to the performance.
The evening concluded with cake and mulled wine in the lower hall. The KCC’s “Les Mis, the Nativity” was a resounding success, leaving audiences entertained and delighted.
