On his daily constitutional, Mike noticed that some silly frogs had laid their spawn in a puddle which will dry out, in a ditch which is wet – but could also dry out – and even some in wheel ruts, which is a very dodgy place to lay spawn.
So, we set off with our spawn rescue kit – an old sieve on a long pole and a bucket
gathered up the spawn and plonked it in the bucket with some puddle water
Then from the wheel ruts
Then the first lot in the ditch
The orange coloration is due to the high iron content of the water running off the fields. I wonder if that will affect the tadpoles in any way, when they eat the jelly?
There was yet more in another section of ditch
Mike then gently emptied the bucket into a ‘vacant’ section of our pond
as the section where the ‘resident’ frogs have been laying is full
And now we wait for the ‘dots’ to turn into ‘commas’!
