Small business owners in Orkney and Shetland who have been affected by the significant changes introduced by US President Donald Trump in his Tariff Wars have some positive news from the Royal Mail.
The Royal Mail has been trying to support customers wishing to use their services and announced that:
” From Thursday 28th August, customers can use our new PDDP (Postal Delivery Duties Paid) service, which meets the new US customs requirements and minimises work for sending customers.”
Trump’s measures meant that small items valued at $800 or less were no longer exempt from import duties from 29 August 2025. The changes affected goods entering the USA from any country in the world, including the UK.
It all got very complicated and regrettably for small business owners and organisations the increased paperwork as a result of the tax to pay just made it not feasible to continue posting to the US.

Although this simplifies the process there are still duties and fees to pay. It’s ironic that a nation that carved out its independence over a refusal to pay taxes has now introduced possibly the most complicated and bizarre ones worldwide.
