Lunch in Stromness?

By Bernie Bell

We wanted to meet up with a friend for a cuppa, in Stromness.  The Flattie Bar at the Stromness Hotel has recently re-opened as a Tea-room – a slightly strange concept for those who knew it before!

We decided to check out the new ‘Flattie In A Teacup’ …… and what a difference!

There’s a well-stocked ‘bar’ for coffee, tea and cakes

It was a bit early in the day for lunch, but sandwiches and salads are available.

The room is light, airy and pleasantly decorated, including art-work by local artists

I like the  decorative details, such as the light fittings

And the wooden panels around the counter

A bit of nostalgia for those who remember the Hamnavoe Restaurant upstairs in the ‘old days’ – the original table mats

I asked about the ‘Hamnavoe‘ as we were under the impression that it’s for residents only,  but that’s not so, except for breakfast – fair enough!

We were also told that customers can bring their own alcohol and……always a plus….dogs are allowed.

We’ll be back!

Taking advantage of being in Stromness (we don’t go to town much!) we then raided the charity shops – the Pussy-cat shop then the Red Cross and, across from the Red Cross…… lo and behold Flori was open and a table was free!

We’d fancied trying it for lunch for some time but never managed to catch it open so, Carpe Diem, we did so and it’s small, but perfectly formed – two tables, lovely food – we’ll be back there too!

After a time of limited options, suddenly there’s plenty of choice of places to go for lunch in Stromness!
