Model Yacht Regattas #Orkney 100 Years Ago

Model Yachts have been a popular pastime for Orcadians for generations.

In Sanday, New Year’s Day 1926, the Northern Sanday Model Yacht Club held their annual regatta on the Loch of Galilee. It was a fine day for it after the deep snows which beset outdoor activities in Christmas week.

All the members of the Northern Sanday club turned out and were joined by the St Colm’s Club from Burness. A large number of islanders came to see the regatta where 19 yachts took part.

10 Rater – Class was won by John Tulloch of Burness taking 33minutes and 30 seconds to complete the course. Second was John Thomson, Park, whose boat took 37 minutes and 30 seconds.

5 Rater Class was won by Dr McPhail, whose boat took 37 minutes with second place taken by John Thomson, Ortie, at 38 minutes 30 seconds.

Fifteen yachts took place in the Sweepstake race which was won by Thomas Dearness, Bayview in 38 minutes 40 seconds.

After the races were over the members of St Colm’s Club and their friends were entertained to refreshments at Galillee by the members of the Northern Club. In the evening a whist drive and dance was held in Sellibsiter School. – The Orkney Herald, page 5, 6 January 1926.
