“She was always dependable, cheerful, and willing to help.”

Linda Bonner’s bike standing outside the Deerness Hall is now a thing of the past.

Earlier this year Linda retired as caretaker after over 25 years.

On Sunday, at the first Afternoon Teas and plant sale of the year Brenda Foubister, the current chair of the Deerness Community Association, said,

“Anyone who has ever helped run a community hall knows, the caretaker is the person who quietly keeps everything going behind the scenes — opening up, locking up, making sure things are where they should be, and somehow always noticing the jobs everyone else missed!

“Linda has done all of that, and much more, over many years with unstinting dedication. I’m sure there were days when Linda knew this hall better than her own home — and probably spent more time here too!

“Through teas, sales, meetings, events, and all the little unexpected dramas that come with community life, she was always dependable, cheerful, and willing to help.

“Linda, no words can truly express how much your hard work and commitment have meant to this community. You have been a huge part of the hall for many years, and your efforts have been appreciated more than you probably realise.

“Although we know you’ll still play a massive part in contributing to the community, we are delighted that you now have the chance to enjoy a well-earned retirement — with more time for yourself, your family, your golf and hopefully a little less rushing around after everyone else!

“It now gives me great pleasure today to present you with a small token of the community’s appreciation. Please join me in thanking Linda for everything she has done, and in wishing her a long, happy, healthy, and adventure-filled retirement.”

This afternoon was time for the first afternoon teas at the Deerness Hall. As is usual at this time of year it is combined with a plant sale.
