Orkney is one of more than 200 communities who will be celebrating Armed Forces Day today, Saturday June 27.
There are events in Kirkwall and Stromness:
Kirkwall : 10.45 am parade, flag raising and speeches by the Lord Lieutenant, a representative from the Armed Forces and Council Convener Graham Bevan. – Kirk Green.
Stands, and static displays from current, reserve, and cadet forces members, as well as representatives from local support groups and charities.
Stromness: 12 noon flag raising and speeches by the deputy Lord Lieutenant, an Armed Forces and Council – Town Hall.
Royal British Legion Scotland, Stromness Branch: a coffee and information afternoon
Almost 10,000 Armed Forces members live and work in Scotland, and the defence sector directly supports nearly 12,000 jobs in the country. Approximately 176,000 veterans live in Scotland.
At the last census, 2022, there were recorded 828 armed forces veterans in Orkney, out of an adult population of 18,448.
