Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is offering evening tours at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Skara Brae Neolithic Village.
The after hours tour will take a limited number of visitors into the village which is semi submerged in the sand dunes and into some of the structures.
Normally visitors to the site remain above the village confined to a pathway and only able to look down into the structures.
Esther Renwick, District Visitor and Community Manager for Orkney & Shetland at Historic Environment Scotland, said:
“Skara Brae is the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Western Europe, making it one of Scotland’s most fascinating historic sites. The chance to walk among these ancient buildings is incredibly special, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer visitors this unique opportunity to explore the village alongside a knowledgeable guide.
“The village has a wonderful atmosphere in the evening, after the crowds have gone home. Although our remote ancestors lived there more than 5,000 years ago, their presence can still be felt in those quiet moments.”
Visitors should note that, as part of the tour, they will have access to selected houses within the village. Due to narrow, uneven pathways and sloping grassy surfaces, this part of the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users. Visitors may also need to bend down to view some features of the village.
The tours will take place on selected dates until Thursday 27 August between 5.30pm and 8pm.
