Wild, Still

By Bernie Bell.

Whilst talking with one of the ladies over-seeing the bones table at The Ness Drop-in event

She told me about an exhibition in the Kirkwall Museum of bones and photographs relating to the cattle of Swona, which is a collaboration between Josh Spindler and Ingrid Mainland

It’s a truly strange and intriguing exhibition.

There are the bones – a skeleton laid out in a case

and weird little critters – or that’s how I see them anyway

The image of the decomposing cow, entitled….’Mother 2’ is somehow fascinating. It’s just not something you see these days and happens because the animals on Swona are wild – living, dying, rotting…going to the earth

A possible Viking-era chapel has recently been discovered on Swona…

A small island – a lot of life.
