The Insidious Influence of A.I.

By Bernie Bell.

I was talking with someone about the perils of people accepting and using A.I. un-questioningly.  He told  me that there is now an A.I. camera which has no lens.  If a person is in an interesting place or at an interesting occasion – they can programme into the camera all the details of where they are – the weather at the time, etc.  The camera then brews up a composite image.

First question – why?  If you’re somewhere, why not just…take a photo?  What you’ll get from the A.I.  camera WON’T BE REAL!

The person I was talking with is worried, as he’s a photographer and sees this development as being yet another way that A.I. might replace humans.

I was thinking, surely not for the big human life events, such as weddings?  But many photographers aren’t content to do weddings etc.

Think of the great photographers who, by having a good camera, a good ‘eye’, and fortunate timing, have produced art-photography, wildlife photography and iconic images of historical events.

Robert Mapplethorpe, Don McCullin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Bailey – just to name a few.

Not doubting his word, but finding it a bit hard to believe, I Googled

It’s true.  It’s horribly true.

I took this picture of the Moon caught in a herring basket – using my eyes, my imagination and my little happy snaps camera.

A.I. would put the ‘facts’ together – but it wouldn’t see what’s there
