A Social Tariff would “provide much-needed relief to vulnerable households this winter.”

Highlands and Islands SNP MSP Maree Todd has backed the Scottish Government’s calls for the introduction of a social tariff, which would provide discounted energy rates for low-income and vulnerable households. Modelling has suggested that around 660,000 households across Scotland could see their annual energy bills reduced by an average of £700 under such a scheme.

The Chancellor is due to set out the Autumn Statement on Wednesday the 28th of October.

Maree Todd MSP said:

“The Highlands & Islands are energy rich, yet we pay some of the highest energy bills in Europe.

“Despite promises to cut energy bills by hundreds of pounds, under Labour my constituents have only seen their bills increase. This is creating real hardship for many households.

“It is imperative that the Chancellor listens to the calls from the Scottish Government and implements a social tariff to provide much-needed relief to vulnerable households this winter.

“The Autumn Budget must deliver real action, not more empty promises.”
