The National Records of Scotland weekly update on deaths involving Covid published on 19th January 2023 is as follows:
- As of 15th January 2023, there have been a total of 16,568 deaths registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate.
- In week 02 there were 101 deaths involving COVID-19 (17 more than the previous week).
- The provisional total number of all deaths registered in Scotland in week 02 of 2023 (9th to 15th January) was 2,020 (450 or 29% above the 5-year average).
- Deaths involving influenza have risen in recent weeks. There were 121 deaths where influenza was mentioned on the death certificate in week 2, up from 91 in the previous week. This is the highest weekly number of flu deaths registered in over twenty years.

Age 45 – 64: 4 deaths, 3 Female, 1 Male
Age 65 – 74: 14 deaths, 7 Female, 7 Male
Age 75 – 84: 35 deaths, 19 Female, 16 Male
Age 85+ : 47 deaths, 28 Female, 19 Male
There was 1 death involving Covid in Orkney.
There were 19 deaths in Care Homes, 6 at Hone/Non Institutional Setting and 76 in Hospital.
Of the 101 deaths involving Covid, Covid was the underlying cause in 74 of them
There were 395 deaths due to respiratory causes , an excess on the 5 year average of 176.
There were 2020 deaths due to all causes, an excess over the 5 year average of 450.
