The weekly update from the National Records of Scotland published on 26th of January 2023 is as follows:
- As of 22nd January 2023, there have been a total of 16,654 deaths registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate.
- In week 03 there were 83 deaths involving COVID-19 (19 fewer than the previous week).
- The provisional total number of all deaths registered in Scotland in week 03 of 2023 (16th to 22nd January) was 1,699 (277 or 19% above the 5-year average).
Those figures in more detail:
Age 45 – 64: 3 deaths, Male
Age 65 – 74: 8 deaths, 3 Female, 5 Male
Age 75 – 84: 29 deaths, 9 Female, 20 Male
Age 85+ : 43 deaths, 24 Female, 19 Male
There were 18 deaths involving Covid in Care Homes, 7 at Home/Non Institutional Setting and 58 in Hospital.
There were 1,699 deaths due to all causes, an excess of 277 taken over a 5 year average. In Orkney there were 8 deaths, 1 of which involved Covid.
Of the 88 deaths involving Covid, Covid was the main cause in 53 of them.
Excess deaths were recorded across all categories:
- Cancer: 387 deaths, an excess of 75
- Dementia/Alzheimer’s: 186 deaths, an excess of 29
- Circulatory: 402 deaths, an excess of 47
- Respiratory: 233 deaths, an excess of 51
