A FLOOD ALERT has been issued for Orkney.
This alert is for coastal flooding.
Due to a combination of high tides and strong winds, there is a risk of flooding from waves and spray overtopping to low lying areas, especially in Kirkwall, St Margaret’s Hope and at the Barriers, today Sunday during the evening and night.
Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188. An updated FLOOD WARNING has been issued for Churchill Barriers.
The prevailing weather forecast, along with high tides and large waves means that flooding from the sea is expected. Strong gale force winds from W to NW direction means that a combination of wave overtopping, spray and debris may result in the closure of the Churchill Barriers. The highest risk is for the period 2 hours before and 2 hours after the high tide on Sunday 24th December around 1930 GMT.
