The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney is to receive £375,000 from the Scottish Government towards developing green hydrogen.
The award is part of the Scottish Government’s Hydrogen Action Plan which sees £3.4million in this round of funding going to 11 successful applicants out of 18 who applied.
Speaking in the Scottish Parliament about Scotland’s Green Hydrogen Future, Scotland’s hydrogen future, Acting Net Zero Cabinet Secretary Gillian Martin said:
“Hydrogen stands as a critical pillar of Scotland’s route to net zero by 2045, but also, alongside the development of our offshore wind capacity, as one of Scotland’s greatest industrial opportunities since the discovery of oil and gas in the North Sea.
“A just transition remains at the heart of our approach, and we are determined that no community, particularly those which have powered our economy for generations, will be left behind as we move away from burning fossil fuels towards a low carbon energy system.
“We are working to build a hydrogen economy in which the benefits of our energy transition are shared, and which harnesses the full potential of our skilled people, our worldclass industries, and our natural resources.”
HYSEAS III in Orkney
In March 2017, Orkney Islands Council joined as a consortium member of the HYSEAS III project. EU funding for this project amounted to €9,300,000 to develop a working ferry using a hydrogen propulsion system. The Shapinsay route was identified by the consortium as the ideal location for trials of a working hydrogen RoRo ferry. OIC’s share of the Horizon 2020 EU funding was €643,000.
