Today, 27 February, The Orkney News is at the Scottish Parliament attending an event organised by the Scottish Community Alliance. The one day conference aims to create ‘a stronger and more resilient community sector in Scotland.’
Delegates from all over Scotland are attending from a wide variety of organisations. The Orkney News is there as independent media based in Orkney.
Delegates will be welcomed to the event by Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP, before hearing from a range of speakers covering positive stories about effective community action to deliver real change.
A series of workshops will allow delegates to delve into more detail on local democracy, community wealth building, inclusive business models, nature-centred planning, youth groups, and local media. A cross party group of MSPs in a Q & A will allow reflection on the key elements and actions from the day long event.
We’ll post an update on how the day went and what was learned from other communities but also how voices from the islands, in our case Orkney, must be heard before decisions are taken which affect us.
