Poetry Corner: The Kids in the Shoe

On this day in 1880 Dr Marie Stopes, founder of first modern birth control clinic, was born in Edinburgh. Stopes was originally a palaeontologist of some renown, but it was in the field of family planning that she became a somewhat controversial public figure. After a failed marriage was annulled she wrote a book on birth control and sexual technique, ‘Married Love’ (1918). Scot Clans


 There Was An Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.

She had so many children, she didn’t know what to do.

She gave them some broth without any bread;

And whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.

  1. Good choice of poem.
    At one time, we didn’t have much choice – now, we do. A number of choices – it’s up to us to make them/take them.
    I didn’t know she was a palaeontologist.
