Many of us shall awaken to the aftermath of what’s being called “The Beast from the East” or to those of us in the North, Snow. I predict, trains shall stop at the very least, the Country shall stop at the very most, but it shall be reported on, so I thought I’d start the rollercoaster of snow events with a poem from Robert Frost.

Snowy Scene

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

  1. “And miles to go before I sleep.”
Yesterday, Mike set off in the early morning to catch the flight to Aberdeen for a meeting – meant to be away just for the day, returning on the evening flight. Most of the day, the weather looked OK. He called from the airport to say that the flight was scheduled – all looked promising. Next, the airport website told me it was ‘on route’. Hurrah! He’d be home before the worst of it hit. Then – the weather set in – suddenly the website for Kirkwall airport told me that that flight was cancelled – ? Eh? So I rang the information desk and got a very helpful man who told me that the plane got to the airspace above Kirkwall, circled for a while, then it was decided that it couldn’t land, and so it was on it’s way back to Aberdeen. I said that that’s the down-side to living here – there are many up-sides, but – when the weather closes in – that’s that if you’re off-island.
So, eleven o’clock last night, Mike rang to say that he was in a Premier Inn in Aberdeen, and would get to sleep, having been up since 5 that morning.
He’s back in the airport, now – flight delayed – travelling in hope.
Not so much miles to go before he sleeps, as miles to go before he sleeps in his own bed!
And I keep checking the websites, and looking out the window……………
    So it goes.
