When the UK goes to the polls for the General Election voters will require to provide Photo ID in order to cast their vote. You will not be able to vote without it.

New regulations brought in by the UK Government mean that for anyone voting in person, a form of photo ID will be needed. This does not apply to anyone who uses a postal vote.

Accepted forms of ID include:

  • a passport
  • driving licence
  • Scottish National Entitlement Card (Saltire Card)
  • older persons or disabled persons bus pass
  • Young Scot card.

If you do not have one of these you can apply for a FREE  ID online at www.voter-authority-certificate.service.gov.uk/

You’ll need:

  • a recent, digital photo of yourself
  • your National Insurance number

You can do this online or by post . You’ll need to print, fill out and send or take the form to your local Electoral Registration Office.

Residents in Orkney and Shetland who do not have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for free ID, either online or by completing a paper application form and sending this to the Electoral Registration Office in Orkney at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall. Tel: 01856 876222, email ero@orkney.gov.uk or to the Electoral Registration Office in Shetland at 20 Commercial Road, Lerwick, ZE1 0LX Tel: 01595 745700, email ero@shetland.gov.uk.

I’m just glad that I do postal voting – a necessity which has proved to be A GOOD THING.

A change of Government can’t come too soon.
