Mike Macleod, the Scottish Labour & Scottish Co-operative Party Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Orkney, fully supports the decision of Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar to call for Sir Keir Starmer to step down.
Mr Macleod said –

“As a member of the last Scottish Policy Forum, I know Scottish Labour has good policies for Scotland. I have every confidence that Anas Sarwar and Jackie Baillie are the people to make them work.
“A Scottish Labour Government in Edinburgh will bring so many benefits for Orkney – more money for housing, speeding up planning, improvements to the NHS and Education, and so much more. However this is being drowned out by the noise from Westminster. And the SNP are of course desperate to deflect attention from their own record of failure.”
“The Labour Government itself has implemented many valuable measures which will change people’s lives for the better – the Employment Rights Act, the Warm Homes Plan, the ban on mobile phones in schools, Great British Energy, the recent AR7 Action of offshore wind which will lock in cheap renewable energy for the future, and so much more.
“However all this good news is being drowned out by the many abrupt U-turns on other policies, and the Mandelson scandal. The clear impression given is of able Labour ministers working hard but their achievements being undermined by mistakes from the top.”
“Out canvassing in Kirkwall this last Friday I met a lady who basically said “If you get rid of Keir Starmer, I’ll vote Labour.” Echoing so many who have said this, in the islands and elsewhere.”
“Of course we must always remember and thank Sir Keir Starmer for his tremendous achievement in getting Labour elected in 2024. But we now have to move on.”
“Today Anas Sarwar has again shown that he has the vision, determination and strength to take the decisions that are right for Scotland. I fully support him and urge my colleagues in Scottish Labour to do likewise.”
Elections to The Scottish Parliament take place on Thursday 7 May 2026.
