Dear Orkney News,

We used to donate regularly to the RSPCA. Then, they decided to stop taking in unwanted animals. I had a heated exchange with them about the word ‘prevention’ in their title. We stopped supporting them regularly, and focused more on small animal rescue charities.

Also, we moved to Orkney, so the SSPCA became more relevant.

And now, the SSPCA is withdrawing from the Scottish Islands.  The charity claims that this is due to financial difficulties.

I suspect that it’s another example of when an organization becomes too big and loses sight of its original purpose.

Withdrawing from the Islands will entail staff cuts, while the CEO is still paid a LOT… Unite accuses the SSPCA of worker ‘neglect’ over real terms pay cut

The money is there – do they not realise that they’ll lose supporters which will affect their financial situation?

This is a very stupid thing to do, as well as heartless and un-caring.

I don’t know what the solution is. The responsibility will now fall on the vets and good-hearted folk that are prepared to rescue animals and take them to the vets.

A lot more animals will suffer, and a lot more will die or need to be killed to alleviate their suffering.

A very, very wrong decision.

Society in – let’s call it Britain – is regressing instead of progressing. A society can be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable.  I’m straying a bit from the point. Or am I?

Petition: Stop SSPCA cuts in Scotland’s islands

Bernie Bell….I agree with you wholeheartedly! I relied on the SSPCA for help with injured and dying Mute Swans. They never let me or the injured swans down. Dealing with a swan with a fish hook lodged or its throat is not a task for the faint hearted and I doubt if vets would come out pro bono in such a situation! The SSPCA is not the easiest organisation to reach but the CEO is Mark Hunter and may be contactable at :enquiries@scottishspca.org

  2. As someone who loves Orkney and the rest of Scotland, this saddens me terribly. I am in the USA, and recently adopted an 11 year old female amputee bully. She is a love, and deserves nothing less from me. What can I do? What can the USA animal groups do? If I can help, please let me know how.

That’s very kind of you. As you’re so far away, probably the best thing you can do to help would be to sign the petition, or even write to the SSPCA expressing your concern – that way they will see that the world is watching them! My other respondent gives an email address to contact the CEO. Thank you for wanting to get involved – and for adopting the wee dog. Certain kinds of dogs get a bad name – but how they are is usually down to how the owner is.
