In 1933 A model yacht regatta was held on Bignold Sailing Pond in Kirkwall. It was organised by the Kirkwall and Holm model sailing club and lasted for 6 hours, starting at 10 in the morning and not finishing until 4pm.

In 1929 the Orphir Public School held its Christmas concert at the Comrade’s Recreation Hall. There had been fierce gales the whole day through and these continued into the evening.

On Christmas Day there was thunder, lightning and heavy rain. As the day progressed the winds got ever stronger to gale force.
