Interview with Simon Tarry the Independent candidate for the North Isles
I grew up in rural Yorkshire, moving up to Orkney 3 years ago with my wife Sarah and our rescue dog Trixie where we live on Westray.

Simon Tarry Independent candidate for the North Isles
I am a registered mental health practitioner with over two decades of experience and now work part time for NHS Orkney as a trauma therapist and have a small private practice. Previously I was a councillor for 12 years within a large farming district council and a Unitary Authority councillor. I served as shadow executive chair of social services, shadow spokesman for housing, environmental committee member, planning and the policy and finance committee. I wish to offer my experience and enthusiasm to my fellow residents and the council and as before if elected I would represent the whole of the North Isles and aid those that need my help where ever they may reside on Orkney.
Housing is an important issue within Orkney and the North Isles in particular I will look at ways of providing truly affordable housing so that those young people who want to stay on the islands can do so.
Transport has been highlighted to me and as a frequent ferry user I agree that the fleet to the North Isles needs to be replaced sooner rather than later and look at options to help freight transport that can be delayed both ways due to the weight restrictions and the capacity of the boats. I would want to develop a fully integrated transport system where all providers speak to one another keeping the needs of the traveller to the forefront of any discussion.
Talking to farmers and fisherman on my way round the North Isles it is apparent that Brexit will have a massive impact on theses industries and the interests of Orkney need to be in the forefront of the minds at both parliaments. A number of the trade options being considered, exclude farming and fishing two very important industries so it is paramount that these two sectors are highlighted at the start rather than a later add on.
Fuel poverty is another major issue that needs to be addressed, looking at the production of renewable energy and rather than going south it being utilised here for the benefit of of the island residents.
