Recovery of the Men of the Nancy Glen

The Scottish Government have stepped in after the decision of the Marine Accident Board  to leave the Nancy Glen where it had gone down.

The tragic loss of Duncan MacDougall and Przemek Krawczyk of fishing vessel the Nancy Glen hits home to all of us, not only those who live in fishing communities ,the risk many face in the industry.

The Scottish Government will be working with all those involved to retrieve the men’s bodies so that they can be returned to their families.

The work will involve raising the vessel so that divers may enter. The cost of recovery will be met by the Scottish Government.

Fergus Ewing Fisheries Secretary in the Scottish Government said:

“In these tragic and extremely exceptional circumstances, with the Nancy Glen having been lost within sight of the family homes and the wider community, it is only right that the Scottish Government intervenes and works with the families and salvage experts to search the vessel. The money raised through crowdfunding can go to the families rather than the recovery operation.

“A recovery operation will pose serious logistical challenges, and will need to be undertaken with the safety of divers and others involved uppermost in mind.

“This has been an upsetting time for all those involved, but we owe it to the families of the fishermen who were lost to mount this operation.

“And while there is no guarantee of a successful outcome, I hope our intervention will help bring some closure to the families and friends of Mr MacDougall and Mr Krawczyk.”

  1. My thoughts and condolences go out to the two families who have lost husbands. As for the accident given the old cynic that I am, I just hope somebody has asked the MOD, “Were any of your submarines playing at silly buggars in these waters at this time, given the nature and suddenness of this tragic loss?”

  2. I hope the operation is a successful one, and the family’s are able to get closure of this tragedy and lay there men to rest.
I also hope that the fishing industry and community in Scotland take note of the actions of the Scottish Government in making this happen.
