Orcadians feature amongst those in the 2019 New Year Queen’s Honours list

Jane Bruce lately Headteacher, Papdale Primary School Kirkwall  for services to Education in Orkney.

David Oddie, Honorary Secretary and Treasurer, The Society of the Friends of St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney. For services to the community in Orkney.

Medallist of the Order of the British Empire

Joyce Tulloch: For services to Girlguiding and the community in Orkney

A knighthood went to Professor Michael Anthony John FERGUSON CBE FRS – Regius Professor of Life Sciences and Academic Lead for Research Strategy, University of Dundee. For services to Science.

Also knighted was the author Philip Pullman for services to literature.

Lesley Lawson ( Twiggy) becomes a dame for services to Fashion, Arts and Charity as does Anne Gloag for services to Business and Philanthropy.

Anyone can nominate a person for an honour. Nominations are checked by various UK Government departments. The selected nominations then go to the honours committee. The committee  puts a recommended list to the Prime Minister and finally to the Queen who makes the award.

The Awards for the Fire, Police and Ambulance Services were also announced.

Queen’s Police Medal

  • Nelson Telfer, Assistant Chief Constable, Police Scotland
  • Liam Fitzpatrick, Police Constable, Police Scotland

Queen’s Fire Service Medal  

  • Brenda Gillan, Group Manager, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service
  • Kevin Phillip, Community Firefighter, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service

Queen’s Ambulance Service Medal 

  • Paul Gowens, Lead Consultant Paramedic, Scottish Ambulance Service
