On the 10th of May 1956 The Silent World won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival.
The film, a documentary, was made by Jacques Cousteau and Louis Malle. It was one of the first films to use underwater colour footage.
The film has been criticised for the killing of marine wildlife during its making.
The title of the film is taken from a book by Jacques Cousteau.
