Labour Candidate Coilla Drake Describes SNP Island Bond as a ‘Gimmick:

Coilla Drake, Labour candidate for the Orkney constituency in the May 6th Scottish Parliament elections has described the SNP pledge to create an Island Bond as a gimmick ” thought up by people who don’t really understand our needs.”

The SNP manifesto pledge is to offer :

100 bonds of up to £50,000 to young people and families to stay in or to move to islands currently threatened by depopulation. The bonds will support people to buy homes, start businesses and otherwise make their lives for the long term in these communities. How is the SNP supporting Scotland’s island communities?

Coilla Drake said:

“It does not address the underlying cause of young people leaving the isles; lack of good, well paid jobs and affordable, warm homes.

“This bond will raise the price of those houses that are currently affordable out of reach of local people.

“The SNP could retain 100 local families in the Highlands and Isles by halting the centralisation of Air Traffic Control.

“The SNP have been in Government for 14 years. Average wages are still low and poverty, child poverty, fuel poverty and inequality are worse not better. More than one in four (260,000) of Scotland’s children are officially recognised as living in poverty and more than two-thirds of children in poverty live in working households.

“There are a very long list of promises the SNP have made to the electorate, but which have never been met. Why should voters believe their promises now? For example they failed to deliver their promise of delivering superfast broadband to every home and business by 2021; they failed to deliver on their commitment to close the education attainment gap; they scrapped their 2007 pledge to end student debt; and so much more.  We really do need a better Government. “

There are 4 candidates standing in the Orkney constituency for the Scottish Parliament Elections to be held on Thursday 6th May 2021

  • Samuel Bown – Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Coilla Drake – Scottish Labour Party.
  • Robert Fraser Leslie – Scottish National Party (SNP).
  • Liam Scott McArthur – Scottish Liberal Democrats.

  1. Coilla, I hate to remind you that during EIGHT YEARS of Labour, Lib/Dem Coalition you managed to build exactly EIGHT HOUSES, for social rent one per year and then returned over £100 million to the Treasury because they couldn’t fid anything to spend it on. Sadly Coilla we all remember Labour promises going back over 120 years!!!

  2. Oh Coilla, I didn’t make clear that was EIGHT houses for Social Rent throughout Scotland!!!!

  3. Oh Coilla, just to be even clearer, only Nicola has has kept all her promises over the past 14 years…closed the attainment gap in schools, reduced poverty, reduced hospital waiting times, reduced drug related deaths, reduced …..well where do I stop!!!
