When you vote in the Scottish Parliament elections on Thursday 6th of May 2021.There are two ballot papers.
- Orkney Constituency – First Past the Post – you have one vote
- Highlands and Islands Region – you have one vote – you vote for a political party or an independent individual
Alan Reid Liberal Democrat

Alan Reid is the lead candidate on the Highlands and Islands Regional List for the Liberal Democrats. He was MP for Argyll and Bute from 2001 until he was defeated by Brendan O’Hara of the SNP in 2015. You can check on his voting record here: They Work For You
The main issues for Alan Reid are urging the Scottish Government to build more ferries and for the Tory UK Government to stop the delays for fishing exports due to Brexit.
The Liberal Democrat manifesto pledges to ‘Put Recovery First’.
We won’t risk destroying trade with the rest of the UK through an independence referendum, and we will keep close ties with our European neighbours for the benefit of business.
The priority is to get the job done not distract ourselves with talk of pointless and expensive vaccine passports which will divide people, limit the opportunities of young people and take up time that could be spent on recovery.

Highlands and Islands Regional Vote
There are 2 people standing as independents (not in a political party) and there are political party lists.
If you vote for an individual that is recorded as a vote for that person.
If you vote for a political party then, depending on the share of the vote that party gets across the whole region, the candidates are elected from that party selected list. The political parties have ranked their candidates according to their selection rules of who they think is the top one etc.
