Norwegian Constitution day is on the 17th May. This is Norway’s National Day, their day of Independence; and it is marked with a public holiday each year.

Each year in Orkney we celebrate our close links and ongoing ties with Norway by marking the day with many events including a parade through the streets of Kirkwall.

Unfortunately just like last year the commemorations had to be severely curtailed due to Covid 19 restrictions.

This year the Orkney Norwegian Friendship Association held a small Remembrance Ceremony at the Norwegian Gravestones situated at St Olaf Cemetery, St Ola just on the outskirts of Kirkwall, Orkney at 10.30am on the morning of Monday 17th May.

The ceremony was confined to the local Norwegian Consul Leslie Burgher, the Norwegian Friendship Association Committee Members and their partners, along with for others. There were flags both large and small which remained in situ until later in the evening. John Mowat Chairman of the Orkney Norway Friendship Association kindly sent us some photos to share.
