London Pride (Saxifraga x urbium ) is a sturdy wee plant that spreads well soon filling spaces in gardens where other plants would struggle.
It is easy to grow and can be subdivided so soon you can have lots of new plants from the one clump.
Alternative names are St. Patrick’s cabbage, whimsey, prattling Parnell and none-so-pretty.
It is said that bombed sites in London in World war 2 were rapidly re-colonised by this amazing plant. In 1941 Noel Coward penned a patriotic song about this wee flower.
London Pride has been handed down to us,
London Pride is a flower that’s free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it forever will be.
